"Our vision is to create inquisitive and passionate problem solvers by teaching the whole child to become positive contributors to our community."
We have a new student leadership group on our campus called Student Guild. Student Guild was created as a way to add student voice to our PBIS program on campus. After talking with some fabulous principals who have similar groups on their campuses in places like Florida and Red Deer, Canada, I knew that having the students come up with a mission was important.
A group like Student Guild is going to benefit from a mission statement because we can look at it as our guide to create our Plan of Work. Oh sure, we have an idea of what we'd like to do each month with our Guild members, but we want them to find their own voice to create their leadership adventure.
Yesterday, the Guild worked on their mission. I continue to be inspired by these 10 young, brilliant 4th and 5th grade minds. If these folks are the future of compassion and collaboration, then I want them to be my bosses when they get older.
They split up into three teams to work on crafting a statement that defines our ideals and what work we want to do this year. Then they voted.
The mission is still in it's editing stage, so I'll leave you with a tiny little way in which these 10 kiddos are becoming positive contributors to our community. Part of the statement says something like:
To show that we can like people for what they're like on the inside, not what they look like on the outside.
If you need me, I'll be sitting in the corner, stunned into silent awe at our future.
