Think Vacation Bible School, but in public school and only on one character. This year, I selected John Williams to be our composer. The beauty in this selection is that the new Star Wars movie just came out and a whole bunch of my students went to see the movie, so they're familiar with the main themes of the Star Wars music.
The parent volunteer that made the presentation simply knocked it out of the park. She KILLED the presentation preparation, and I'm so thankful that I have her in my corner. I'm also a little sad that her youngest child is in first grade, because she only has four more years of presentations to make. She's a former English teacher, so she "gets it."
You guys, I even had a parent make light sabers out of pool noodles for her class to use during her presentation.
My students were PUMPED to be learning about a composer that was old, but not dead. We usually introduce them as "really old and really dead," so they were VERY interested in the living legend of the music that they know so well from movies and television commercials!
I can't believe the level of awesome that is achieved by my school's community. I'm so lucky to be where I am!
